Terry King: “Cemeteries as Community Use Assets

Terry explores opportunities for increasing visitation and community connections using existing facilities and grounds together with considerations when developing new assets.

Too many of our cemetery spaces are underutilised high cost assets that could benefit the community beyond burial and cremation purposes. How should we lift and diversify the community experience? In this session Terry will discuss:

  • New ways of thinking in adaptation of single use to multi-purpose assets

  • Using cemetery space for active and passive recreation

  • Community and cultural events planning and engagement

  • Leveraging and preserving History to attract visitation.

From 2012-2019 Terry was the Executive Director at Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT, Vic) in the portfolios of Infrastructure, Maintenance and Operations. He has been the initiator and lead on infrastructure and transformation projects across portfolios demystifying cemeteries, growing visitation and stimulating economic growth. He previously worked at RMIT University as the Director of Property Services creating places and spaces for students to work, study and play.
